LOST ASTEROID RETURNS TO EARTH

Almost 8 years ago, the Catalina Sky Survey discovered an asteroid as wide as a football field.

Named 2010 WC9, the space rock faded away before astronomers could fully trace its orbit. Now it’s back. 2010 WC9 re-appeared last week, and on May 15th it will fly past Earth, splitting the distance between Earth and the Moon. Astronomers in the southern hemisphere may be able to photograph the asteroid shining like an 11th magnitude star as it zips through the constellation Pavo (the peacock).
