Regardless if they are really extraterrestrials, there’s much we can learn from recent sightings.

“When the long awaited solution to the UFO problem comes, I believe that it will prove to be not merely the next small step in the march of science, but a mighty and totally unexpected quantum leap.”
—J. Allen Hynek, astronomer
“If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans.”
—Stephen Hawking, theoretical physicist, cosmologist
“If our solar system is not unusual, then there are so many planets in the universe that, for example, they outnumber the sum of all sounds and words ever uttered by every human who has ever lived. To declare that Earth must be the only planet with life in the universe would be inexcusably bigheaded of us.”
—Neil deGrasse Tyson, astronomer
“There may be aliens in our Milky Way galaxy, and there are billions of other galaxies. The probability is almost certain that there is life somewhere in space.”
—Buzz Aldrin, astronaut
In D.C., in the halls of politics and even the Pentagon disclosure will soon be upon us. Either we are being watched as a delinquent, adolescent species attracting attention from beyond or we are suffering a very unique mass psychosis.
In Santa Fe, our local postal worker tells of the time when he saw two large red orbs over his car, suspended a few hundred feet above the ground, then watched these uncanny objects speeding off towards the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in New Mexico, one of the preeminent meccas for UFO’s in the world. In this rarefied air, between Los Alamos lab and the Santa Fe Institute where scientists study complex adaptive systems and where indigenous peoples still honor the telluric dance of the world, remarkable sightings hold a singular place in people’s hearts and minds. As they have for decades, for centuries all over the world.
But the increasing number of sightings of late perhaps allude to a unique dimension in the consciousness of the evolution of humanity. Whether we seize the moment and bring it back down to earth, to finally retrieve this miraculous planet and its life forms, is up to us. Something beyond our normal range of experience is hinting that we are not alone. Something uncanny is happening to our species. And it may help us to become more fully human than we ever divined. Something more than a script in the collective consciousness of humanity may very well be upon us. If UFO’s are real, they may comprise the greatest revolution in our species’ history.
At night, the same postal worker saw four white orbs in perfect alignment, each the size of a car doing the same hovering movement for a few seconds and then tore off, disappearing into the night sky. There have been more and more sightings over the years as if something beyond were watching the strange antics of the human species creating havoc on a planet teeming with magnificent and miraculous and frail life forms.
At Cornell University, the astronomer Francis Drake who worked on the Arecibo Telescope and who lectured with Carl Sagan, once came up with the famous Drake formula for calculating how many possible civilizations existed in our galaxy alone. And the answer is possibly thousands or many times that. Carl Sagan, though, not willing to risk academic funding at a Congressional Hearing in 1968 said, “As I understand what the committee would like from me, is a discussion of the likelihood of intelligent extraterrestrial life… clearly it is the hypothesis that unidentified objects are of extraterrestrial origin which the committee must have in mind. I’m delighted to tell about contemporary scientific thinking along these lines, but let me begin by saying that I do not think the evidence is at all persuasive, that UFO’s are of intelligent extraterrestrial origin…”
Sagan’s conversation with fellow astronomer J. Allen Hynek in 1984 contradicts the above statement. Having famously worked on the SETI project, Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence program, Sagan held private views very different from those he espoused in his professional career. He too thought UFO’s were real. When asked to comment on the PRG (the Paradigm Research Group) Director Stephen G. Bassett said, “Carl Sagan and J. Allen Hynek perfectly represent the intellectual and political dilemma faced by the human race during the second half of the 20th century. Both helped to radically change our view of the world… Yet one must be profoundly wrong on the most important historical event in human history.” Carl admitted to Hynek that he surmised there were other intelligences in the universe. That is why the imperative of saving what is left of the planet is joined spiritually and morally with the greatest discovery in human history, that we are very probably not alone in the universe.
The reality of UFO’s is profoundly perceptual, probably a multi-dimensional map of reality far beyond what most of us can fathom happening to us in this very precarious time, either because we want to believe or we are being forced to behold something we need in our conscious evolution. In the cosmic scheme of things, we may be as children in the galactic spiral, youngsters in the solar system and are literally playing havoc with something very special called life. The speed, acrobatics and technical marvels of many of these objects boggle our understanding of Newtonian physics. Objects rushing at thousands of miles per hour and then stopping on a dime, or a cloud, silently, without the proverbial sonic boom. And then disappearing instantly. Are we being watched by some civilizations perhaps tens ofthousands of years ahead of us? They may be increasingly concerned by our profoundly dangerous behavior on this small orb. Especially since the bomb in 1945. Even if these were idle speculations, and mere fantasy, why not err on the side of caution, for life as we have it on this earth is being shaken to its core. And we are challenging the ladder of existence as never before in the 4 billion years of the sun’s lifetime.
In the same continuum of experience, we did happen to see, as newcomers to this UFO bound state of New Mexico, two large green orbs flying over the mesa 20 years ago. They were not swamp gas or headlights, nor a low flying airplane. The lights were silent, and hovered over the ridge like a pair of oversized basketballs and then they quite simply sped off very fast and vanished. They were like a pair of bright eyes gazing at us from another time, ciphers of brilliant intrusion we will never forget.
The Apache tribe in the north part of the state say many sightings have occurred near Dulce. Then there is the inescapably remarkable incident of July 8,1947 in Roswell, New Mexico in the south of the state which occurred during a severe thunderstorm. A mysterious object crashed, a flying saucer according to the press release by Lieutenant Walter Haut. General Roger Ramney issued a statement the next day saying the vehicle was only a military high altitude weather balloon. Roswell and the world would never be the same again.
Today, we continue to be mystified by these inexplicable and unidentified sightings all over the planet. Whether alien life forms were kept in secret for years or not, the mystique lives on and has captured the imagination of people for many. I have heard numerous stories of strange bouncing lights at Hopi, hovering balls in blue luminescent display as if they were deliberate attempts to make their presence felt, as if to acknowledge to earthlings that something else exists beyond our limited knowledge as humans that is of inconceivable universal significance and that the time to be open to a phenomenological awakening is now. And is it happening increasingly for a reason.
Lt. Commander Alex Dietrich, a veteran combat pilot, gave full testimonial on Anderson Cooper, of having witnessed a UFO off the coast of San Diego 16 years ago. Testimony which would not have been taken so seriously by the media a generation ago. Lt. Ryan Graves, a former Navy pilot, told “60 Minutes” that some pilots on training missions had seen UFO’s “every day for at least a couple years.” Graves says about the unexplained phenomena, “I am worried, frankly. You know, if these were tactical jets from another country that were hanging out up there, it would be a massive issue. But because it looks slightly different, we’re not willing to actually look at the problem in the face. We’re happy to just ignore the fact that these are out there watching us every day.” Scary indeed.
When we were in southern Peru in 2002, the Nazca Lines amazed us. They are among the most wondrous three dimensional mysteries on the planet. Works that can only be seen distinctly from above. And while some like Van Daniken in his “Chariots of the Gods” claim they were made by extraterrestrial visitors, it is healthier to keep one’s feet on the ground and believe that the Indigenous people of Peru had a deep reverence for the life forms of their native land, something foreign companies and industrial enterprises who continue to mine the land have forgotten. Flying towards the cloud laden Andes and seeing the giant hummingbird, whale, spider, monkey, llama, lizard, cactus and even dog “drawings” carved into the ground as if by a giant, it is easy to be mystified by the power, presence, size of these expressions unlike any on Earth. They’re much more than art. They feel like transcendent ciphers. They represent part of the beings the creators of the lines honored and that formed the organic matrix of their lives. After the flight, returning to our hotel, our guide showed us an hour video of a “mother ship” hovering near a telegraph pole, and two small lights emerging from under its belly. He had no explanation but he guessed this unique vision was not of this world. Captivating, mystical beyond words, the guide thought the ship was perhaps extracting energy from the wires. He had no idea what he saw. Peru continues to be one of the world’s meccas for sightings.
Ezekiel’s Merkabah vision in the Bible may indeed have been one of a spaceship. If previous history around the planet is anything to go on, evidence or at least some kind of galvanizing experience of the first kind go back a ways. ‘God’ or some sort of angelic vehicle appeared to Ezekiel and shared with him visions of the future. Joseph Blumrich, a NASA engineer, no less, in his book “The Spaceships of Ezekiel” makes a very convincing case for Ezekiel’s encounter with beings not of this Earth and even included technical descriptions of the spacecraft he witnessed. Millennia later similar, but even closer encounters continue to haunt us.
Barney and Betty Hill’s account of an extraterrestrial abduction in late September 1961 in New Hampshire was the first report of its kind in the U.S. Travis Walton, a forestry worker, described his astounding supposed abduction in the Apache Sitgreaves forest near Snowflake, Arizona, in the book “Fire in the Sky.” And lately in Taos, a few years ago, hunters came across a few strange dark figures on opening day for elk season. One of the hunters, Brinkely, identified what he thought were two fellow hunters, with large heads and black bodies. The next day a structure about 100 feet long was spotted and then suddenly as they drove towards it, it disappeared.
The frequency of sightings since we detonated the bomb at the Trinity site in New Mexico is almost astounding. If they are real and not just a mass consciousness alternating figment of our imagination, it is perhaps because these other beings, other species sense something is awry with our kind. Some have perhaps correctly imagined that these other beings are concerned about the ability of our species to change life not just on Earth, but the entire solar system. Humanity imperils not just itself but the entire order of life on Earth. They might be concerned. We might be the equivalent of toddlers to them. Top heavy delinquents whose technology is way ahead of our spirituality and whose materialism threatens everything in the ark of life.
The phenomena are so pronounced that even former President Obama is bringing disclosure to the general public in a way that has never been divulged or permitted before. In a time when humble viruses are causing upheaval among our species, life forms from beyond our sphere are forming the other great bracket of earthly existence. If they are not mere projections, thought forms or illusions we are witnessing perhaps the most revelatory moment in human history. Between the disease forming microscopic and the potential extraterrestrial phantasmagoric we are perhaps being forced to reevaluate not only our earthly existence, but our entire cosmic place in the solar system and even beyond, just as we are heading out beyond our Earth.
Seven years ago, on the border between New Mexico and Arizona a very close encounter happened that was bewildering. A blind Native grandmother was outside near her home when she was visited by what her people called a “metaphysical being.” Supposedly she was told telepathically to hold onto her culture, because the world was changing. When we visited the area years later, mystified by the sandstone rocks and artifacts that go back five millennia, our guide showed us the petroglyph of a “star man,” a very special entity, carved at a special height, thirty feet above the canyon floor. The connection between the two beings was telling. What was more remarkable was that after the close encounter, corn pollen was found around the floor of her home, as if proof of the being’s passage. A few days later, she regained her sight.
One can dismiss such stories as fables. The hallucinations of an elderly grandmother who literally could not see and who imagined things in her unique isolation from the world. Why was she chosen? Perhaps because she held special knowledge of her people who have had encounters for millennia. Maybe, because in her blindness she saw and was receptive to the essential, a wavelength of life and consciousness most people are not.
While there had been sightings all over the planet from Area 51 to the July 12 to July 29 1952 UFO’s over D.C., it definitely feels like time itself is speeding up. Between our conscious awareness and our unconscious need to believe, we are living between two eras, BC before contact and the next stage when our species acknowledges that it is not alone. Of course, we can know that others are watching us and they are concerned. We have upset the order of the solar system. Maybe we are being warned in this thermonuclear time, that in endangering ourselves we upset the frequency of the entire solar system. We have not listened to the whales and their transoceanic songs. We have obliterated them. The seas are acidifying. Before life is lost on Earth, perhaps forever, we are being given a warning in the form of marvelous, inexplicable, hovering and vanishing “angels” that may have visited us so many times before.
But this time the top brass in D.C. have admitted that something remarkable is in the offing. Obama, of late, had admitted that something is out there. Since the 1950’s and 1960’s and Project Blue Book the U.S. Air Force led investigation has examined thousands of sightings. Many of the cases have been deemed inexplicable. Not clouds, not aircraft, not atmospheric reflections. Some scientists, ranging in expertise from meteorology, physics and astronomy are more and more being drawn into the investigation.
More experts are asking hard scientific questions and some indeed acknowledge that something is happening. Two declassified and released documents by the Pentagon from 2007 and 2015 and most recently in April of 2020 show three videos in which bright lights were seen moving by pilots from a US Navy training flight from 2004 clearly showing an object that resembled an elongated capsule. The object was rotating about its axis. And what was more remarkable, the video showed more than one object, but an entire platoon of these tic- tac shaped, fast moving entities. The DOD released the videos to “clear up any misconceptions by the public on whether or not the footage that has been circulating was real, or whether or not there is more to the videos. The aerial phenomena observed in the videos remain characterized as “unidentified.”
The media is abuzz with witnesses and disclosures. Something is happening. The majority of sightings seem to have occurred in the U.S., while in Asia and Africa, sightings seem to be much more rare. Whether they are meteors or Venus rising over the horizon, most sightings occur in the evenings and on Fridays, at the end of a busy work week. James Oberg, a former NASA employee, writer and consultant, after decades of research, believes in more mundane terrestrially bound explanations and has debunked most of the sightings he has heard as either fireballs or clouds. Most sightings to Oberg are mere “space dandruff” or misunderstandings of what space journeying looks like to the human brain. The sightings NASA astronauts supposedly have of UFO’s are to Oberg, nothing more than mundane objects being experienced in unearthly settings. The mind playing tricks. Time will tell.
There are 4,000 known exoplanets orbiting other stars and that number is doubling every four years. What are the chances that a highly sophisticated civilizations have visited us? And while the nearest of these habitable planets may be no closer than 20 light years away, a few may have the` technology for propulsion we cannot yet dream of. Most astronomers believe there is life out there. As Geoff Marcy, an astronomer who has discovered many exoplanets says, “The universe is apparently bulging at the seams with the ingredients of biology.” Perhaps humanity feels it needs to be connected to lessen the extraordinary possibility that we are alone and increasingly pariahs among Earth’s miraculous living beings. Are UFO’s America’s new religion, a collective hallucinosis? Having done so much damage to the world, having exploded the first bomb, a vision beyond our planet may also be just what Creation has ordained for so many Americans, to remind us of our immense responsibility to life. But the sightings have had a world wide range. Something is being presented to humanity, at this time, for a reason.
It was in Africa, of all places, that I had a dream when we took our son on his second trip to the Rift Valley where so much of our species began. Exhausted after an eleven-hour flight, I had a dream, one of almost extraterrestrial impact, but really a lucid dream in which I was awake and able to control what I was experiencing. It was a vision and I was awake in the landscape. I was near the edge of the Rift Valley and had to jump over a small chasm to get to the edge of the cliff. I had to wind my way under a fence to finally see the Rift without barriers, with clarity, with total freedom. I saw a river below, and a large rectangular object vibrating in the water as if a cipher, a monument from somewhere beyond this Earth. I knew that I was seeing something special and I heard a voice. Maybe it was from all the science fiction films that have bombarded us over the decades, as Oberg has intimated, but its message rings loud and clear even today. Especially because it came from the cradle of humanity, Africa. As I looked in wonder, awake in the dream, the object sent me a message: “Hold onto the waters of life. You are not alone in the universe.” But it was just a dream. Or as humanity just might be ready to finally accept in this fragile and potentially revelatory time in our evolution, maybe it wasn’t.
“I’d bet almost anything that life from another planet, if formed independently from life on Earth, would be more different from all species of Earth life than any two species of Earth life are from each other.”
