The official government documents give details of the unusual things people have seen in the skies over the years

Declassified government documents reveal dozens of UFO sighting around northern Lincolnshire since 1997.
From “a big red dome” and “suspicious” lights to an object a quarter-of-a-mile long with “three large green windows”, they give an insight into the strange sightings people around our region had between 1997 and 2009.
The official documents, which are available to read on the UK Government’s website, include unidentified flying objects that were reported to the Ministry Of Defence.
The majority of the sightings took place in the late 1990s, a phenomenon which some have attributed to the popularity of TV show The X-Files and blockbuster alien movies such as Independence Day and Men In Black at the time.
David Clarke, a UFO historian and consultant to the National Archives, told Associated Press: “It’s evident there is some connection between newspaper stories, TV programs and films about alien visitors, and the numbers of UFO sightings.
“Aside from 1996, one of the busiest years for UFO sightings reported to the MoD [Ministry of Defence] over the past half century was 1978—the year Close Encounters of the Third Kind was released.”
The MoD recorded UFO sightings from the 1950s until 2009. After December 1 that year, reports of this kind are no longer recorded or investigated by the government department.
Northern Lincolnshire certainly saw more than its fair share of unusual goings-on in the skies throughout the last years of this period, with more than 30 reports filed by the MoD.
Below you can read through all the reports from our area over a 12-year period – and some are very strange indeed!
